Altitun was sold in May 2000 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of ADC Telecommunications Inc.
Altitun specializes in the design and manufacturing of tunable lasers for telecommunication applications. The company was founded by four leading researchers from Acreo in 1997.
The base technology is the result of several year's development by Industrial Microelectronics Center AB (IMC), a contract research company, affiliated with Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). The main application of Altitun's lasers is in telecommunications networks where many signals at different wavelengths are sent down a single optical fiber. This technique is called wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). A single Altitun tunable laser can back up more than 40 conventional fixed-wavelength lasers in a WDM system, or can be used to optically route individual channels to meet changes in demand.
